Throwback Thursday: Cowboy Bebop

Space, a place that holds so many unanswered questions, a place that has so many mysteries, and last but not least a place where space cowboys travel searching for their next bounty. As you guys have probably realized by now, Throwback Thursdays are childhood memories that I love to indulge in and I hope you guys feel the same. Cowboy Bebop was one of the very few space animes that I really enjoyed. This anime isn’t normally something I would watch in the first place. Come to think about it, I would choose just about any other genre before any kind of space related anime. But the opening intro looked good so I thought to myself “lets just go with it”.

Here is a brief summary from the wiki page:

In 2071, roughly sixty years after an accident with a hyperspace gateway made the Earth uninhabitable, humanity has colonized most of the rocky planets and moons of the Solar System. Amid a rising crime rate, the Inter Solar System Police (ISSP) set up a legalized contract system, in which registered bounty hunters (also referred to as “Cowboys”) chase criminals and bring them in alive in return for a reward.

I don’t quite remember the episode that I started on but I do remember the quote that spike said in that episode.

Look at my eyes Faye. One of them is a fake because I lost it in an accident. Since then, I’ve been seeing the past in one eye and the present in the other. So, I thought I could only see patches of reality, never the whole picture. I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was over.”

-Spike Spiegel

This quote was the one that pulled me in. As a child, of course I’m not going to know what the meaning behind it was but as I grew older and as I had faced my challenges I knew exactly what Spike meant. To me at least, it means he’s stuck dwelling on the past while trying to focus his mind on the present but just isn’t able to be intuitive to what’s happening around him. Then that’s where my mindset needed to change, after a certain event I had to gradually be able to tell myself that there’s a brighter future no matter how dim the present may seem.

Spike was definitely my favorite out of the whole cast just because of how non-chalant he was about everything. He always seemed to have a way to keep people in check and when things got out of hand? He always had that smirk like there was nothing in the world could stop him. And when he was fighting? You knew exactly it was about to go down.

And last but not least, I must mention that Cowboy Bebop probably had one of the best death scenes of an anime character. That’s all I’ll say really.

Well I don’t want to drag on this post too much longer so I’ll end it here. What were your favorite parts of Cowboy Bebop? Did it make you want to be a space bounty hunter at one point? Be sure to leave a comment! See you space cowboy.
